If you have searched this comparison you have probably already found the confusing part: the i4000² is not a finer filter than the i2000². It is not a better filter. On the specification that most people assume separates them — micron rating — they are identical.

What separates them is flow and capacity. Which one you need is a question about your machine's peak water draw, not about how clean you want your ice.

Here is what the manufacturer's spec sheets actually say, and how to pick.

Four things in that table are worth dwelling on, because they answer most of the questions people arrive with.

There are two cartridges, not four — and not one

This is the detail most dealer listings get wrong, and getting it wrong means ordering a part that will not fit.

  • The i2000² systems — Single and Twin — take the EV9612-22.
  • The i4000² systems — Triple and Quad — take the EV9612-32.

Within a platform the cartridge is the same and only the count changes: a Twin is two EV9612-22s, a Quad is four EV9612-32s. Across platforms it is a different part.

The capacities confirm it. The Twin's 18,000 gallons over two cartridges puts the EV9612-22 at about 9,000 gallons each. The Triple's 36,000 over three puts the EV9612-32 at about 12,000. They are different cartridges with different ratings, which is what the model numbering has been telling you all along.

The practical consequence: moving from a Twin to a Triple is not a bigger version of the same purchase. It changes the part number you stock. If you run both platforms across a group, you carry two cartridge SKUs, not one.

They are all 0.5 micron

All four spec sheets use the same language: the system filters particles "as small as 0.5 micron in size by mechanical means."

A correction worth flagging, because it will cost you otherwise: Pentair's own product pages currently list several of these systems at 0.2 micron, and one page contradicts itself between its table and its body text. The specification sheets — the controlled documents — say 0.5 micron across the range. We publish 0.5. If you are comparing dealer listings and seeing different micron ratings for the same part number, this is why, and you should trust the spec sheet PDF over anybody's product page, including ours.

The capacity scales with the cartridge count

9,000 → 18,000 → 36,000, across one cartridge, two, then three.

Divide those out and you get roughly 9,000 gallons per EV9612-22 and about 12,000 per EV9612-32. That is our arithmetic, not a published figure — Pentair rates the systems, not the individual cartridges, so we are showing the working rather than passing a derived number off as a specification.

It is also precisely the inference we refuse to make one row further down.

Where it stops checking out is the Quad. Its spec sheet states the service flow rate and does not state a rated capacity. A 48,000-gallon figure circulates on Pentair's website and across dealer listings. We cannot source it to a Pentair controlled document, so we do not print it as a specification. If you are budgeting cartridge spend on a Quad, size from your measured water use rather than from that number.

Flow rate is the number that actually decides

Single 1.67 → Twin 3.34 → Triple 5 → Quad 6.68 gpm. Roughly, each additional cartridge buys you another 1.67 gpm.

That is the design logic: manifolding cartridges in parallel splits the incoming flow between them, so each individual cartridge stays inside its own rating while the system as a whole keeps up with a thirstier machine.


So what is the difference between i2000² and i4000²?

Strip away the model numbering and it comes to this.

The i2000² is the light-duty platform. One or two cartridges, up to 3.34 gpm. Pentair positions it for standard ice machine applications — the machine behind a single bar, the café's undercounter unit, the restaurant's one modular head.

The i4000² is the high-volume platform. Three or four cartridges, 5 to 6.68 gpm, described on its spec sheets as being for "higher volume, higher flow and higher capacity ice machines." The bigger remote-condenser units, the hotel, the multi-machine line.

Both use identical media and deliver identical filtration quality. You are not choosing a level of protection. You are choosing a size.

There is one genuine feature difference worth knowing about. The larger systems' manifolds include an outlet pressure gauge alongside the shutoff and flushing valve. That gauge is more useful than it sounds — pressure drop is how you see a cartridge loading up, and the Twin and Quad sheets tell you to change cartridges when "pressure falls below 10 psi (0.7 bar)". The Single and Triple sheets say "when flow becomes too slow" instead — same idea, without a number you can work to. Absent a gauge, you are working from the calendar alone.

The "PF" models

You will also see PF variants — PF-i2000², PF-i4000². These add an integrated prefilter ahead of the main cartridge, which catches coarse sediment before it reaches the primary media.

The case for one is straightforward: if your incoming water carries visible sediment, or you are on a well, or the building's plumbing is old enough to shed rust, a prefilter stops your expensive primary cartridge from being consumed by dirt. If your municipal supply is clean, it is a part you did not need.


How to actually pick one

Step 1: find your machine's peak water draw

Not average daily use — peak flow during a fill cycle. It is on your ice machine's spec sheet. This is the number the filter must be able to keep up with.

Step 2: add anything else on the same line

If the ice machine shares a water line with a fountain, a coffee brewer or a second ice machine, add their peak draws together. This is the most common sizing mistake in the category, and it is invisible until the machine underperforms during service — the one time everything draws at once.

Step 3: pick the system whose rating exceeds that total

"Must not exceed" is the manufacturer's phrasing, and it is a ceiling, not a target. Sitting near the top of a system's rating leaves you nothing if you add equipment later.

Step 4: sanity-check capacity against six months

The Insurice sheets all say the same thing — this from the Twin (EV9324-02):

"Change cartridges on a regular six (6) month preventative maintenance program."

Capacity and time are separate limits, and whichever arrives first governs. Estimate your gallons over six months. If that number is comfortably under the system's rated capacity, six months is your interval and capacity is not your constraint. If it is over, you are changing cartridges early — and stepping up a size may cost less per year than buying cartridges more often.

That is the only situation in which "buy the bigger one" is genuinely the cheaper answer.


What these systems are certified for

Precision matters here, so this is the certification statement verbatim from the Twin-i2000² spec sheet:

"System Tested and Certified by NSF International against NSF/ANSI Standard 42 and 53 for the reduction of: Standard No. 42 Aesthetic Effects — Chemical Unit: Taste and Odor Reduction, Chlorine Reduction; Mechanical Filtration Unit: Particulate Reduction, Class I. Standard No. 53: Health Effects — Mechanical Filtration Unit: Turbidity Reduction, Cyst Reduction, Asbestos Reduction."

In plain terms: taste and odour, chlorine, particulate, turbidity, cysts, asbestos.

⚠️ The i4000² systems certify a narrower list

Do not assume that block covers the whole range. It does not, and this is exactly the per-product trap this site keeps pointing at — here it is inside a single product family.

The bigger, more expensive systems carry fewer Standard 53 certifications than the smaller ones. That is counter-intuitive enough that we double-checked it against all four spec sheets before publishing it.

If turbidity or asbestos reduction matters to your site, the Triple and Quad do not carry those certifications and you should not assume they inherit them from the smaller models. Read the sheet for the exact part you are buying.

What is not on either list is as important as what is.

Chloramine is not mentioned anywhere in any of the four spec sheets. These systems claim chlorine reduction. If your utility has switched to chloramine — many have, and it is more stable and considerably harder to strip out — chlorine reduction is not the same claim, and the Insurice range is not the right answer. Check with your utility before you buy. We would rather tell you that than sell you a system that leaves a medicinal taste in your ice.

Cyst reduction is a specific Standard 53 claim covering organisms like Cryptosporidium and Giardia, achieved by mechanical means — the cyst is physically too large to pass 0.5 micron. It is not a general microbiological safety claim, and every Everpure sheet carries the standard caution accordingly:

"The contaminants or other substances removed or reduced by this drinking water system are not necessarily in your water. Do not use with water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before or after the system."

Everpure makes one further claim on these sheets, which we reproduce exactly as written rather than restate, because it concerns the filter media and not your water:

"Proprietary Micro-Pure® II filtration media effectively inhibits the growth of bacteria on the filter media that can decrease product life"

That is Everpure's claim about their own media, made under the EPA registration number printed on their spec sheet (EPA No. 002623-IL-002). It is not a claim about what the system does to your water supply, and we are not making one.


The operating details that matter on install day

Common across all four systems:

  • Pressure: 10–125 psi (0.7–8.6 bar), non-shock
  • Temperature: 35–100°F (2–38°C) — cold water only
  • Flush at every install and every cartridge change. The sheets are emphatic: "Always flush the filter cartridge at time of installation and cartridge change," and for the larger systems, "flush cartridges by running water through system for five (5) minutes at full flow." Skipping the flush puts carbon fines into your ice.
  • Mount vertically with cartridges hanging down, and leave clearance underneath — the larger sheets specify space "below the cartridge for easy cartridge replacement." Fitting a manifold into a tight cabinet and discovering you cannot drop a cartridge out of it is a genuinely common and entirely avoidable install mistake.
  • Change when capacity is reached, or at six months — whichever is first. On the change trigger the sheets differ: the Twin and Quad say to change "when pressure falls below 10 psi (0.7 bar)", while the Single and Triple say "when flow becomes too slow". Only two of the four give you a number you can measure, which is the practical argument for fitting a gauge.

The short version

  • Two cartridges: EV9612-22 for the i2000² systems, EV9612-32 for the i4000².
  • Same 0.5 micron across the range — but NOT the same certification list. The i4000² sheets drop turbidity and asbestos.
  • i2000² = up to 3.34 gpm. i4000² = up to 6.68 gpm. Pick on flow.
  • Add every appliance on the shared line before you choose.
  • Six months or rated capacity, whichever comes first.
  • Trust the spec sheet PDF over any product page, including Pentair's own — they currently disagree on micron rating.
